Rocket League Splits Doubleheader Weekend

March 16, 2020

Over the weekend, the Soniqs’ Rocket League team faced off against Cloud9 and Flight for Week 7 of RLCS Season 9. Going into the weekend, the Soniqs were on a five-game win streak dating back to February 15, 2020.

At first, it seemed like the Soniqs would add on to their hot streak after jumping up to a 2-0 lead over Cloud9.  In the opening two games, the Soniqs’ defense didn’t surrender a goal and the offense put through three goals. After dropping the third game 2-0 against Cloud9, the Soniqs began to lose momentum. A connection issue, which caused a lengthy delay before game four, further took the edge off Soniqs’ hot start to the match.

After Cloud9 sent game four to overtime, Gimmick clinched the victory with a goal 25 seconds in, forcing the series to a deciding game five. With continued connection issues for Torment, Cloud9 was forced to replace him with coach and substitute player Fireburner. Despite the change in the lineup, Cloud9 showed little weakness and completed the reverse sweep over the Soniqs with a goal from Fireburner in overtime. Up until the series against Cloud9, the Soniqs hadn’t lost a single game in overtime throughout the RLCS season.

The struggles continued for the Soniqs into the second series against Flight. In the opening match, the Soniqs couldn’t find the net and lost 1-0 in overtime after a goal from Sea-Bass at +1:50. Despite the rough start, the Soniqs regained composure and went on to defeat Flight 3-1, aided by a strong performance from Dappur who put in two goals in the series.

The Soniqs have one more match left in RLCS Season 9 next week with a series against G2. That series gets underway March 21 at 3:50 EST as the Soniqs look to secure 2nd place in the RLCS.
